About Burigi-Biharamulo National Park

Burigi-Biharamulo National Park, located in the Kagera region of northwestern Tanzania, spans diverse landscapes that include rolling savannahs, rugged hills, marshes, and three large lakes—namely Lakes Burigi, Rweru, and Nkugute. Established in 1980 and covering approximately 1,060 square kilometers, the park protects ecosystems vital to a variety of wildlife species. Its geography features a blend of miombo woodlands and swampy areas, providing ideal habitats for large mammals such as elephants, lions, buffaloes, hippos, and various antelope species. Bird enthusiasts will find over 550 species recorded here, including rare water birds and raptors.

Historically, Burigi-Biharamulo was designated a game reserve before being upgraded to national park status, emphasizing conservation and ecotourism development. The park is less frequented than Tanzania's more famous parks, offering a more remote and intimate experience with nature. Visitors can explore extensive wildlife viewing opportunities through guided safaris, boat rides on Lake Burigi, and birdwatching walks. The park also preserves cultural sites significant to local communities.

Key landmarks include the lakeshore areas renowned for hippo sightings and the dense woodland zones harboring elusive predators. Burigi-Biharamulo's appeal lies in its raw, relatively undisturbed wilderness and rich biodiversity. The park supports community-based tourism initiatives aimed at sustainable economic growth and wildlife conservation. Accessibility is generally via road, with nearby towns providing lodging and tour services. Overall, the park is an important yet less-known Tanzanian protected area offering wildlife spectacle and tranquil environments for adventurous travelers.
